Dryas suendermannii
A widespread group of alpine plants from northern regions. They make gradually spreading mats of shiny, bright green leaves scattered with the flowers, normally with about eight petals. These are followed by the feathery seed heads, all twisted the same way, which provide interest for a long time after flowering is over. Dryas suendermannii is a naturally occurring hybrid between D. octopetala and D. drummondii. The deep green, shiny leaves resemble tiny oak leaves, and provide an excellent setting for the white flowers and subsequent feathery seed heads.
