The sages are excellent herbaceous perennials, mainly for open, sunny situations. They usually have aromatic foliage and erect stems carrying many flowers, often brightly coloured.

Salvia forsskaolii ia a native of Bulgaria, with large leaves, above which soar the spires of violet blue flowers, each with a stream of white. Easy and reliable in a sunny, well-drained site.
