Meconopsis x complexa

"On this page we describe all the forms of Meconopsis napaulensis, paniculata and their relatives. Also Meconopsis wallichii, which is probably a distinct species, but is classified as Meconopsis napaulensis Wallich's form. These all form low rosettes of soft, hairy leaves, increasing to up to 1 m across over 2, 3 or 4 years. Then each plant sends up a huge stem with masses of large poppy flowers. The first open at the top of the stem, later ones lower down, over a period of a month or more. Then it dies, and you start again! Why will people spend many tens of pounds for a few hours enjoying a meal, and begrudge one tenth as much on years of pleasure from a wonderful plant?
