Malus sargentii

This is the apple genus, and most apple trees that are grown for decoration in the garden are crab apples. They are usually small trees, with white or pale pink flowers, and abundant small fruit in autumn, in a huge range of colours from brilliant yellow to bright red. Many of them also have excellent autumn foliage colour.

Malus sargentii is native to Japan. Covered with pure white flowers with golden anthers, which open from pink buds in the spring. It's small, bright -red, cherry like fruits contrast beautifully with it's bright yellow autumn foliage, and then persist on into the winter on bare branches.
