Rheum australe

The rhubarbs include some small alpine species, and some dramatic giants. They all provide unusual and interesting structure, often with good autumn colour.

Rheum australe is a good architectural plant through the summer, with it large leaves and plumes of creamy flowers, but in autumn it becomes spectacular, with the leaves becoming red and the seeds on the tall fruiting stems turning brilliant scarlet.
