The dwarf phloxes are classic plants for rock gardens and raised beds, soon making colourful mats, or cascading over the edges of the rocks. They grow quickly, but are never so exuberant that they cannot be controlled. A haircut with shears after flowering keeps them in their place, and encourages thick, healthy growth. There are also slower-growing, more difficult species from America, which are occasionally available. These tend to like dry summers and well-drained sites.
Phlox austromontana forms low, dense mats of deep green foliage with numerous, open, white flowers.
