This is widely used as low, evergreen foliage, making spreading patches of narrow, arching leaves. The narrow spikes are packed with tiny violet-purple flowers, followed by black fruit.
Liriope muscari is one of the few plants that can tolerate dry shade, although it can cope with much wetter conditions too. It makes clumps of dark green, slender, pointed leaves, and from late summer through to the end of autumn is has spikes of small blue flowers, reminiscent (from a distance!) of grape hyacinths, whence its name. In America it is known a lily turf, but I have never heard that name used in Britain, except on web sites that are no doubt inspired by their American cousins.
