The blue gentians of the European Alps are probably the most widely known and loved alpine flowers. At suitable altitudes, from June to August, the trumpet varieties (Gentiana acaulis and its allies) and the starry Gentiana verna relatives are ubiquitous, startling in the intensity of the blue colour.
Gentiana acaulis 'Rannoch' is a selected form of this trumpet species, with narrow leaves and rich blue flowers. It is particularly vigorous, soon forming a mat, and produces flowers freely. (There are nurseries in America offering Gentiana acaulis 'Rannoch'. We acquired this plant as Gentiana angustifolia, and it seems to match the description of that species.)
