Galtonia

Galtonia candicans is the only species of this genus that is commonly grown, but it is an excellent garden plant, one of the best summer-flowering bulbs. It is sometimes known as the summer hyacinth, which is not particularly helpful, as it doesn’t look remotely like a hyacinth! It has strappy leaves and tall stems with a spike of fragrant white bell-shaped flowers, each one hanging downwards. It comes from South Africa, and as with many bulbs from that region it doesn’t like extreme cold, but should survive with deep planting and a good mulch. If in doubt, lift the bulbs in autumn and keep them in a frost-free place.
