It is hardly necessary to say what a rose is. In this group we have species roses, mainly from the Sino-himalayan region. They are widespread there, often with long stems climbing through other shrubs, others being shrubby themselves. All have masses of flowers in summer, followed by red or orange hips, which are showy, and may have all sorts of interesting shapes.
Rosa macrophylla CC6259 is a lovely shrub rose, which comes from Arunachal Pradesh in northern India. It has pinnate leaves, typically with nine or eleven leaflets, and bowl-shaped flower, in a clear pink colour, neither too strong nor too pale.|

| Rosa sericea subsp. omeiensis f. pteracantha is a shrub rose, grown mainly for its dramatic, bright red thorns, which cover the arching foliage. The summer flowers are white with a yellow centre, and are followed by red hips in autumn. Plant it where the sunlight can be seen shining through the fiery red thorns. |
