Primula rusbyi
The Parryi section comes exclusively from western North America, growing mainly in areas that are hot and dry in summer, although they choose relatively wet sites within these areas. They have rather robust foliage, and bright pink flowers. Out of flower they look quite similar to Dodecatheon species, so it is not too surprising that botanists have (using DNA evidence as well) moved the latter lock, stock and barrel into Primula, although with the courtesy of giving them a new section of their own. Primula rusbyi comes from around 3000 m in New Mexico and Arizona, states that are dry and hot in summer at lower altitudes. It is deciduous, and does not appear until one fears that it has gone for ever. Then it rapidly produces its mealy leaves and the stems carrying half a dozen or more large, bright red-pink, yellow-eyed flowers. We grow it under glass, but it is reputed to do well outside, well watered but also well drained.
