Calanthe discolor
This genus of terrestial orchids consists of about 200 species, but not many of them are hardy. Those that are make good subjects for culture in pots in a cold greenhouse or alpine house, or in suitable places in the garden. There they will enjoy woodland conditions, not too wet in winter, and should do well alongside hardy Cypripedium, as well as easy plants such as Trillium. They make clumps of broadish leaves with spikes of a few colourful flowers. Calanthe discolor is pale brown with white markings.
