Osmunda regalis

Habitat: swamps, fens, damp woodland

Flowering: summer

Height: 1 m

Width: 80 cm

Soil: with plenty of humus

A very distinctive large fern, wild but rare in Britain. It eventually forms a large rhizome, with many tall, branched fronds. The topmost section of the frond is the rusty brown fruiting part. In autumn the rest of the fronds also turn a warm brown colour, and remain so throughout the winter, so the plant serves a valuable architectural role.
