A small herbaceous perennial, forming a clump of upright stems with narrow leaves, with bright blue trumpet flowers at the tips of the stems. Some seed-raised plants turn out to be hybrids (probably with Gentiana septemfida); these tend to have rather broader leaves and not quite so upright a habit.
