A deciduous shrub with leaves turning to wonderful dark red in autumn. The distinctive cork-like wings, which line each stem, are more visible after leaf fall. Flowers appear in late spring to early summer and are fairly insignificant, but the seed pods that appear soon after flowering are much more interesting, with reddish-purple wings and bright orange seeds.
