Hops for flavouring beer are the dried ripe cones of female plants. If there are no males around, the cones are still formed, and are even better (and more bitter) for brewing, having no seeds. Sounds like a feminist plot to me. This form has bright golden yellow, lobed leaves, and the flowers, already with the curious shape of the 'cones', are that greeny yellow colour described by purveyors of paint as 'chartreuse'. The plants die back to the ground in winter, so that six-meter height is the product of a single summer.
