The ginkgo, or maidenhair tree, is a so-called living fossil, because it is known from the fossil record, going back 270 million years or so. It is often used as a street tree, where it distinctive fan-shaped leaves add interest in autumn, when they turn bright yellow. Plants that are cultivated are all male - which is just as well, as the fruit have the most revolting smell!
