Cone flowers are members of the daisy family - but are superb herbaceous perennial plants, often used in 'prairie' plantings. The large flowers have many colourful, often reflexed petals, surrounding a prominent central cone, usually in a darker colour. They normally don’t need staking, flower for a long time, and make excellent cut flowers. And they attract bees and butterflies, and birds come for the seeds. What more could you ask?
Echinacea purpurea is a robust variety with pink-purple flowers with a rusty brown cone.
