Crocuses are one of the delights of spring - although even the so-called spring-flowering varieties bloom in later winter. Usually the first flowers are out at the end of January in eastern Scotland, and they can carpet the ground over the next couple of months.

Crocus tommasinianus 'Whitewell Purple' clumps up quickly with purple-red flowers, pale mauve on the inside.
