This is the western American variant of what is variously known as the dwarf cornel or bunchberry, Cornus canadensis in the east of the continent, and Cornus suecica, found round the world in northern regions. Its name implies its home is Alaska, but this collection was made in Montana. Whatever its name and origin, it is a great ground-cover plant for a woodland or shady area, with whorls of six deeply veined leaves. The flowers are small and green, but they are surrounded by four large, brilliantly white, showy bracts, which are followed by a cluster of round, coral-red, fleshy fruits, which persist into the autumn.
