Cercidiphyllum japonicum

Habitat: woodland

Flowering: autumn colour

Height: 8 m

Width: 5.0 m

Soil: with grit and humus

This is the spectacular Katsura tree, with opposite pairs of rounded leaves, which have vivid autumn leaf colours in shades of yellow, orange and red. The fallen leaves smell of burnt sugar when crushed, too. It is wonderful as a specimen plant in a woodland setting. As it is long-lived it likes a sheltered spot if it is to survive for a few hundred years!

Cercidiphyllum japonicum var. sinensis is Chinese variety of the Japanese tree with leaves like a Cercis (Judas tree) - that's what the name says. What it doesn't say is that the Chinese variety also occurs in Japan! Never mind, it is very like the Japanese variety anyway, with opposite pairs of rounded leaves along the stems, becoming vivid red shades in autumn, and giving a caramel smell at about the time they drop. All plants have formed multiple stems from almost ground level.
