This is said to be the most fragrant bulb in the world - and there are plenty of bulbs that would enter this competition. Only one species, Polianthes tuberosa, the tuberose, is commonly cultivated. It makes tall spires of waxy flowers above narrow, pointed leaves. Coloured varieties have now been added to the standard white-flowered kind. All are excellent as cut flowers. They are not hardy, and should be grown in a heated greenhouse or conservatory, or outdoors in a sunny place, but lifted and stored frost-free over winter. Manfreda also used to be included in Polianthes, but has now been given a genus of its own.

Polianthes tuberosa has single white flowers.
